Sauromatums are always fum! I bought this one from Cotswold Garden Flowers, their label says: "Broad dark chocolate-purple spathes with a whiter inside, pale spadix May-June followed by pedate foliage, 40cm. China. Synonym Typhonium gaoligongense." Plants of the World Online says: "The native range of this species is China (W. Yunnan). It is a tuberous geophyte and grows primarily in the subtropical biome. Habitat: Broad-leaved evergreen forests, shaded ravines." The Flora of China says: "Broad-leaved evergreen forests, shaded ravines; ca. 2200 m. W Yunnan (Gaoligong Shan: Baoshan, Longling, Tengchong). In all respects, this species is similar to Typhonium horsfieldii (Sauromatum horsfieldii) except for the closed spathe base." |
