This is one of the most appealing little aroids I have seen. I had little idea what to expect
when I got the tuber, so this was a wonderful surprise. When I first saw the leaf
I was worried that it was going to grow into a giant Sauromatum sort of beastie, but
it stopped at 6", and then flowered. I have it in the conservatory, so I am not sure how hardy it will be. It grew so easily, that I hoped it would winter without problems if kept dry, but unfortunately it was never seen again. I was surprised to be able to replace the plant in 2008, and I hope that I can keep it alive this time. Plants of the World online says: "The native range of this species is W. India, W. Himalaya, Assam to S. China and Indo-China, Sumatera to Lesser Sunda Islands (Bali). It is a tuberous geophyte and grows primarily in the wet tropical biome." Farmyard Nursery says: "A small, surprisingly fast spreading species with short reddish stems topped by radial, velvet textured leaves divided into narrow leaflets. Small fawn coloured spotted spathes, that are rather smelly, are borne during the early summer. Seems reasonably hardy in a sheltered place. Sun or semi shade. Height 15cm (6″)." |
