Saxifraga 'Gregor Mendel'

A vigorous primrose flowered cultivar.

Writing in the Bulletin of the AGS about Blackthorn Nursery, Robert Rolfe said:

"The more vigorous Kabschia saxifrages grow well here, with primrose-coloured Saxifraga 'Gregor Mendel' (still often listed as S. x apiculata) forming the largest clump of all. Bred in Germany over a century ago, for ease of cultivation and generosity of displey it remains without equal."

The Alpine Garden Society list it as raised by B. G.Berlin in 1890. In their encyclpedia the description says:

"A hybrid between S. marginata and S. sancta. There are several cultivars which form rapidly spreading firm hummocks of pale to dark green rosettes l-2cm in diameter bearing inflorescences of usually pale yellow flowers. They are all of easy growth and abundant floriferousness and have considerable garden value even flourishing in normal border conditions.
The following are the best known: 'Gregor Mendel'; this is the original S, X apiculata with its newly bestowed cultivar name. Leaves linear, glossy, pale green and apiculate. Flowering stems 5-8cm tall bearing six to twelve primrose-yellow flowers, petals 7-9mm long. Commences to flower very early in the year and remains in flower for several weeks."
