Saxifraga fortunei 'Bychan'

Archive entry 23.10.22

A vigorous and small growing selection introduced to the UK by Aberconwy Nursery. Originated as a selection from the wild in Japan.
Writing in the Journal of the RHS in 2015, Malcolm McGregor says:

"This small cultivar is a selection of a diminutive form of S. fortunei var. obtusocuneata. It has very small, deep green leaves with pointed lobes, so the compact foliage makes the cushion very attractive, even when not in flower. The flowers are not dwarfed in the same way as the foliage and are similar to those of 'Rokujo' and 'Mount Nachi', albeit on slightly shorter stems."
