Saxifraga fortunei 'Shiranami'

Archive entry 28.10.18

A small, low growing, green, leafy plant with extremely double pure white flowers. I bought it in a garden centre and the label said:

"A stunningly beautiful perennial, excellent for extending colour in the garden. Masses of almost raggedy pure white flowers from October to December."

Writing about the RHS trial in 2015, Malcolm McGregor says:

"A dramatic cultivar in flower, this bears masses of pure white, double flowers with rather broadened petals on green stems. Its green, slightly thickened leaves, typically with rather three pointed lobes and a cuneate base, suggest that it may be derived from var. crassifolia. Early-mid (2013), mid (2014), but slightly earlier in both years than 'Moe'. Small to medium, 20 x 25cm."

Writing in the Journal of the RHS he adds:

"Dramatic Japanese selection with pure white double flowers Sept-Oct."

Writing about a plant exhibited by Mark Childerhouse at the AGS Newcastle show, Robert Rolfe says:

"Recommended for an AGM after the 2012-14 RHS trial at Wisley, this is a reliable, showy, early to mid-season selection. The pure white double flowers are borne in profusion on stems 15-20cm tall, with a foil of deep green, broad, serrated leaves. It performs best if given a wind-sheltered position in part shade with overhead cover."
