Saxifraga fortunei 'Silver Velvet'

A remarkable plant with rounded russet leaves and silver streaks along the main veins. I obtained it as a form of S. fortunei but I am not entirely convinced. It seemed vigorous so I planted it in the garden and never saw it again. I bought it from Primrose Bank Nursery, their label says:

"A rosette-forming saxifrage with rosettes of deep purplish red foliage with bold silver markings. Sprays of pale pink flowers in autumn."

Terra Nova Nurseries in the USA, who distributed it, say:

"Velvety black-bronze leaves are crossed with silver bands to produce an unforgettable plant with white flowers in fall."

De Hessenhof in the Netherlands say:

"In a non-flowering state you would almost think that this is a beautiful variegated houseplant, a Begonia or something. The thick leaves are coarsely lobed and scalloped, dark purple in colour with broad grey streaks around the veins. Plumes of white, star shaped flowers appear from September. The lower petals often turn slightly pink. In one word, amazing!"
