Sansevieria trifasciata

A fairly typical green leaved clone of the species. I bought this one at a DIY superstore where they cared more about selling volume than they did about identity. I'm sure they stocked the green leaved form rather than a variegated one because they were cheaper.

Plants of the World online says:

"The native range of this species is S. Nigeria to W. Central Tropical Africa, Tanzania. It is a rhizomatous geophyte and grows primarily in the seasonally dry tropical biome. It is used to treat unspecified medicinal disorders, has environmental uses and social uses and as a medicine."

Often peddled as an air purifying house plant, following reports of research by NASA. Wikipedia says:

"The NASA Clean Air Study found D. trifasciata has the potential to filter indoor air, removing four of the five main toxins involved in the effects of sick building syndrome. However, its rate of filtration is too slow for practical indoor use."
