Sarracenia (alata x leucophylla)

Sarracenia x areolata is a common hybrid in cultivation. In habitat, it occurs where the parents meet in western Alabama and possibly eastern Mississippi. The parents have sex together wildly and freely, and introgressed hybrids abound. There are a number of Sarracenia leucophylla selections in cultivation that are suspected of showing the influence of Sarracenia alata, and a number of Sarracenia alata selections showing white mottled or frilly lids exist. These may or may not be hybrids, it may not matter, you may not care, the moon may be made of cheese.
In cultivation, a range of forms of the species have been used to produce the hybrid. The resulting offspring tend to have tall thin pitchers, lightly mottled, with frilly lids. Careful selection of the best forms is probably advisable. Sarracenia x moorei is almost universally a good plant, Sarracenia x areolata is a little less convincingly exceptional!
