Sarracenia x excellens
Sarracenia (leucophylla x minor)
A remarkable hybrid commonly produced in cultivation, there are a great number of distinct clones in circulation.
The natural ranges of the two parents just 'kiss' in the Florida panhandle, and the hybrid occasionally occurs naturally.
The hood shape is intermediate between the parents with frilled margins. The areoles in S.leucophylla colour the top of the pitcher white,
rather marbled with colour, and streaked through with veins, like the varicose veins of an elderly stripper in a run-down bar.
Sarracenia minor, on the other hand, has distinct rounded white areoles set into the dark body of the pitcher. The clear distinction between
white areole and coloured pitcher is an often overlooked character that is inherited by this hybrid to outstanding effect.
The hybrid is also commonly more vigorous than either of its parents, which provides some interesting potential for plant breeders.
