One of those rare occasions where a partnership builds on the partners strengths rather than exposes their weaknesses.
The sturdy broad red pitchers of S.purpurea are lifted from the ground into robust clumps by the influence of S.rubra. The best forms of this hybrid are a compact delight in a pot.
The parents meet in South Carolina (S.rubra rubra) and then again in Florida (S.rubra gulfensis) and Alabama (S.rubra wherryi).
In cultivation, the full range of forms of the two species have been used to produce a number a variations on the theme.
