Sarracenia psittacina
Sarracenia psittacina is the lowest growing of the Sarracenia species, the pitchers often obscured by low vegetation. Plants grow in wet conditions, and are often submerged
during the winter. In cultivation plants can suffer from a rhizome rot that is fatal during the winter. Submerging plants in a bucket of water prevents this rot, and can cure
cases if caught early enough.
The natural distribution extends from south eastern Georgia, through the Florida Panhandle, south Alabama, south Mississippi and just crossing into the extreme south eastern
Louisiana. There is some natural variation in the colour of the pitchers, from green with white fenestrations through to dark purple red with pink tinged white fenestrations.
There is an anthocyanin free form in cultivation, and an ordinary coloured form with yellow flowers. There is also a dark purple ("Black") flowered form. A giant form occurs in the Okefenokee
swamp in Georgia, and giant forms have also been found along the Gulf Coast.
