The main population of Sarracenia rubra ssp rubra is found in South Carolina in the coastal lowlands. It stretches up into the extreme south of North Carolina, and extends south
into the north coastal area of Georgia. There is a second much smaller population isolated in western Georgia, around Crawford County that has been described as being "intermediate" between
Sarracenia rubra ssp rubra and Sarracenia rubra ssp gulfensis. It has been speculated that these plants are close in form to the "ancestral" Sarracenia rubra from which the
subspecies now known have developed. This plant comes from that population.
It has a shorter, broader lid than typical S.rubra rubra.
