Scilla bifolia is a common and vigorous spring flowering bulb. It produces seed that germinates
freely, and will naturalise enthusiastically in the right location. Very early flowering. I had it growing in a
pot among other bulbs and it still pops up occasionally where it is not expected. Brian Mathew says in 'The Plantsman': "This early spring squill is familiar to gardeners but there are complications over its taxonomy. Taken in the widest sense (sensu lato) it is a common and widespread species, and very variable. However there is a range of cytotypes, differing in chromosome number or structure and some of these have been described as separate species. ... From a garden viewpoint, the most satisfactory 0f the group is C. bifolia in its narrowest sense (sensu stricto) and its variants;" Plants of the World online says: "The native range of this species is N. & W. Europe to W Balkan Peninsula. It is a bulbous geophyte and grows primarily in the temperate biome." |
