Sempervivum 'Ashes of Roses'

An attractive red-rosetted cobwebby plant with good sized rosettes and good name. I bought it from Pottertons at the AGS summer show south and thought it was so good that I inadvertantly bought two of them. Their label said:

"Dull red leaves with long grey hairs. Pale pink flowers."

Raised by Helen Payne at Oakhill Gardens in the USA in 1970.

Mountain Crest Gardens say:

"A lovely, tufted cultivar with velvety leaves. Its medium to small rosettes shift between sunset tones of pink, orange, and yellow, with a green base color. This variety produces plentiful chicks in the spring."

Gardenworks say:

"Ashes of Roses Hens And Chicks is primarily valued in the garden for its distinctive form, with the flower stalks towering over the foliage. It features unusual clusters of pink star-shaped flowers with burgundy bracts rising above the foliage in mid summer. Its attractive succulent pointy leaves remain grayish green in colour with prominent brick red tips and tinges of shell pink throughout the season. The brick red stems can be quite attractive."
