A grey cultivar with large rosettes that can seem almost blue. I bought a plant that had been grown in a greenhouse and it looked magnificent.
I never managed to get the same purity of colour outside, where it developed red tints. Raised by Kevin Vaughn in the USA
and registered in 1977. Reported on Sempervivum List, Horst Diehm says: "grey-green rosettes with a very nice blue tinge, robust variety" In 2001, Horst Diehn said on his own website (sempervivumpage.de , now long gone, autotranslated because I don't speak any German): "one parent 'Thayne', grey-green rosettes with very beautiful blue tinge" Erwin Geiger reports a different origin on Sempervivum List: "The "blue boy" is a British seedling of cv. Thayne. This variety has medium-sized rosettes with bluish grey-green foliage. Rare in culture." |

Craigiehall Nursery say: "One of the popular 'blue' cultivars with blue-tinged leaves on medium-sized rosettes. We don't actually find it all that blue with us in our cool growing conditions - it will become brighter and more 'blue' in warmer places - but it still makes a very nice show, especially among all the green and red types. Blue Boy is a good, reliable grower that forms nice mounds of rosettes. Bred by Kevin C. Vaughn (USA) 1977." Howard and Sally Wills say: "Greyish-green rosettes that take on a very attractive blue tinge in the summer. Sturdy, compact plants that offset well." |
