A sturdy little plant. I got it in an exchange with a grower in the Czech Republic. Raised by Ed Skrocki in the USA in 1971. Horst Diehm says: "large rosettes up to 8 cm, slightly white ciliated, striking shape / pink flower, 20 cm" Erwin Geiger is quoted on Sempervivum List: "The medium-sized rosettes are not leafy in relation to most other varieties. Characteristic is the squat growth, which looks almost star-shaped in spring. Awarded the "Bronze Rosette" by the American Sempervivum Society in the 70s." It is probably true that I am getting a little old and jaded for growing Sempervivum by the square metre but I have always had a problem with 'Collage'. All due respect to Ed Skrocki, he introduced some marvellous plants, but when it comes to this one, what was the point? I have never felt that it added anything to the mix. A Sempervivum the colour of old putty has never felt to me like a step in the right direction. I didn't grow this one for long but allowed it to fade into the shadows. When that didn't work I threw it on the compost. A vegetable collage, the only laugh I ever got from it. |
