A greyish rosetted that came to me from the Czech Republic, I was surprised when it turned deep red in the autumn sunshine.
Raised by Tom E. Lewis in the UK and registered in 1977. Horst Diehm said: "green rosette with pointed leaves of very dark mahogany red rosettes 5 - 6 cm, height of the flower 15 cm, pink red". Erwin Geiger is quoted on Sempervivum List: "A popular English hybrid with light olive green rosettes with dark mahogany to black-purple tips." Promesse de Fleurs says: "An exceptional variety of houseleek with an intensely dark purple colour that lasts almost all year round. Its medium-sized rosettes bring depth and contrast to flower pots. It will form a striking mound when nestled in amongst stones. This perennial is robust and hardy, but excessive moisture in winter will kill it. Clinging with all its might to life, even when abandoned on a pile of stones, the houseleek is an endearing plant that always manages to conquer the gardener's heart." |
