A fairly undistinguished grey rosette when it arrived from the Czech Republic, I was impressed by the speed with which it coloured as the spring sunshine arrived.
Raised by Nicholas Moore in the UK and registered in 1953. Erwin Geiger is quoted on Sempervivum List saying: "An attractive, British cultivar from the 50s, very striking - but hardly in culture!" Craigiehall Nursery say: "In April, the colour is dark purple/red colour, the rosettes globular and with a high leaf count. At this time the leaves incurve toward the centre like some Chryanthemum flowers. The young rosettes huddle tightly to their mother. The colours brighten to reddish in late spring and the rosettes become more open. Grows and multiplies well. An older variety from one of the UK's earliest breeders. Hardly ever seen now but it still has that 'something different' quality." |
