A cultivar that colours very brightly in full sun. A hybrid between S. arachnoideum and S. tectorum raised by Georg Arends in Germany
and introduced in 1929. Horst Diehm said: "medium-sized, deep brown rosettes, base greenish, silver hairy, flower pink, 10 cm" and went on to quote: "listed in "Unsere Freilandtauden / Silva Tarouca" page 363, from 1934 excerpt: "the new Arend breeds, which emerged from arachnoidum - similar forms with large rosetted dark-leaved (circle of the tectorum), / "Gamma" rosettes in spring almost black-brown with white; valuable for the rock garden." Erwin Geiger is quoted on Sempervivum List: "In my opinion, the most beautiful Arend variety among the trio 'Alpha', 'Beta' and 'Gamma': Smaller to medium-sized, olive to emerald green rosettes that show black-red tones in spring. The leaves are white-ciliated, which gives the hybrid a nice contrast, especially in spring. The white tufts of hair at the tips of the leaves were inherited from its parent S. arachnoideum." The AGS Encyclpedia online says: "Medium-size hairy rosettes of olive green that change to a rich purplish-red in spring, but only holding this colour for a short time." |
