A new cultivar raised by Christopher Hansen in the USA and sold as part of the "Chick Charms" series. (Patented, USPP28284P2).
The Plant Patent says: "The inventor discovered the new cultivar in January of 2014 as a naturally occurring branchlet mutation of Sempervivum 'Ruby Heart' (not patented) that was growing in a 1-quart pot at his nursery in Hudsonville, Mich. (It) exhibits unique foliage coloration throughout the growing season; spring coloration is golden green with dark red markings (picotee), summer coloration is lime green without red margins, fall coloration is golden yellow with dark red leaf margins, winter coloration is red." It is a striking plants and has rapidly gained commercial popularity. Thompson and Morgan say: "It's easy to see the appeal of this colourful little succulent! Sempervivum Chick Charms 'Gold Nugget' transforms from lime green in summer to flame orange as winter advances. The fleshy leaves give this evergreen perennial astonishing drought tolerance - perfect for growing in dry conditions! Plant them in small groups and let them knit together through rockeries and narrow borders, or pot them into alpine troughs and terracotta bowls. Wherever you grow this hardy House Leek, it will provide year round colour and interest." |
