Sempervivum 'Icicle'

Originally thought to be simply S. arachnoideum ssp. tomentosum (- S. Webbianum) this is a colourful and hairy cultivar that I bought from Trecanna Nursery. Raised by Ed Skrocki in the USA but named by Alan Smith and introduced in 1975.

In their catalogue for 1982, Alpine Gardens from Dallas, Oregon said:

"(formerly Webbianum) - Ruby-red leaves. Heavily fringed and tufted. Medium sized."

Horst Diehm said:

"Rosettes medium size, green and red"

Mountain Crest Gardens say:

"A ruby red rosette highlighted by fuzzy white tufts at each leaf tip. It has a bright green center in some seasons and more lavender tones in winter. This variety produces lots of offsets and forms a mounding clump."

Alan C. Smith says in his 1982 catalogue:

"Small red coloured rosettes with long silver cilia and tufts. A very attractive cultivar."
