It's a good name and while it was growing in the greenhouse I was prepared to overlook the fact that it was essentially grey and no lacy.
Once it went outside and turned red it became an abomination, although a very appealing one. Even the eye of adoration couldn't make the name fit.
Raised by Helen E. Payne in the USA and introduced in 1973. Horst Diehm says: "Rosettes pink - lavender, base green, white eyelashes, more pink tinted in autumn, good colouring even in winter" Erwin Geiger is quoted on Sempervivum Liste: "This beauty with the unusual coloration with caramel and pink tones appears slightly bluish and also somewhat silvery due to the heavily ciliated leaf edges. Received a gold medal in 1975!" And Volkmar Schara says: "An older variety that is already very common in the collections. It has very good colors, but unfortunately it shows poor growth in some years. Nevertheless, a great plant." Sempervivums by Post say: "'Lavender & Old Lace' is a popular older variety from 1973, bred by Helen E. Payne in the USA. Attractive lavender and purple colours. The now-defunct Sempervivum Society gave it a deserved Gold Medal in 1975. Classic." |
