Large grey rosetted, the leaves are margined with brown. If I had no other Sempervivum then this would seem a good, sturdy, well marked succulent plant.
Unfortunately when grown with a selection of modern cultivars it has no outstanding attributes. That's not to say it isn't a good plant, it's just completely overlookable.
Raised by Martin Harberer in Germany and released in 1978. Martin Harberer's description says: "Ros. 5-7 cm, dark green, brown tips, ciliated, long runners." Volkmar Schara is quoted on Sempervivum List: "A vigorous houseleek that has a slightly velvety impression. It creates dense cushions." Sempervivums by post say: "'Melanie' is another great sempervivum from Martin Haberer (Germany, 1978). Thick, velvety leaves. Eyecatching. The only downside to this houseleek is that it produces few offsets. We're huge fans of "Close To It All" by Melanie - a song from the 1970s which has brilliant lyrics that need to be heard by everyone today." When you have nothing to say, talk about something else.
