At its best it is a good red/brown rosetted cultivar. A bit dull under cover but superb in a pot outside. Raised by Edward Skrocki in the USA and introduced in 1973. Horst Diehm said: "6 - 8 cm large, flat rosettes, base grey - green, tips dark purple, flower dark red, 15 cm high" The AGS cultivar list says: "A cultivar of merit. Medium-size rosettes of brown, flushed with orange-red. Very good colour throughout spring and summer, but winter colour drab brown." Craigiehall Nursery say: "The rosettes are dark plum-coloured for most of the year giving a long period of interest but in spring the colour brightens and intensifies. The leaves are fairly hard and smooth making Mercury more weather resistant than most but it still demands full sun and good drainage. Seen here growing happily in a handful of soil pressed into a dry stone wall. Definitely one of our favourite dark red Houseleeks and one we have grown for many years. |
