Sempervivum 'Night Raven'

An interesting cultivar with dark shadows between the leaves. I like it but I think it is let down by a name that promises too much. Raised by Ed Skrocki in the USA and introduced in 1981.

Horst Diehm said:

"large rosettes, in summer the leaves are dark - blackish - violet"

It didn't produce distinctive colours with me. Volkmar Schara is quoted on Sempervivum List:

"Larger rosettes that change their coloration noticeably throughout the year. The colors are often a bit watery blurred into each other. Something different!

Erwin Geiger says:

"An American hybrid from the 70s that conjures up almost black leaves with olive-green tips in spring. Unfortunately, this dark coloration is hardly visible in images taken on sunny days. The English term "Raven" stands for raven black.
