A good dark cultivar that makes tight rosettes. Raised by Nicholas Moore in the UK in 1950. Horst Diehm said: "very dark, medium-sized to large rosettes, widely spread in May, then light green inside and then broad, black-brown tips on the outside, dark olive with black-brown edge in July". Erwin Geiger is quoted on Sempervivum List: "An English hybrid with S. marmoreum and S. tectorum from the 50s. At least two different plants are cultivated under this name. You get the more attractive form of the two, which is most often found in the collections. It has the wider leaves and its spring coloration is darker than that of its competitor. This in turn looks like 'Alternberg'." Sempervivums by Post say: "'Noir' translates from French as 'Black' and this sempervivum really is exceptionally dark coloured in spring. Small rosettes. A forgotten gem from Nicholas Moore (Great Britain, 1950)." |
