A large growing cultivar with an interesting terra cotta colour through the winter. Raised by Martin Harberer in Germany in 1977. His description says: "Ros. 6-12 cm, wide, dark red with green tips". Horst Diehm said: "approx. 8 cm large, flat, green-red rosettes, base grey-green, edge eyelashes, flower 15 cm, pinkish red" I found that the size of the rosettes reduced very considerably as it formed a clump. Erwin Geiger is quoted on Sempervivum List: "Orion' forms very large rosettes of up to Ø 12 cm in a noble form. Certainly a lot of S. marmoreum 'Rubicundum' in the blood - hence the bright red coloration." Mountain Crest Gardens say: "Sempervivum heuffelii 'Orion': A red and purple colony of rosettes with firm leaves. The edges of these leaves feature silvery cilia that can give the plant a frosted appearance. These are excellent for adding interest to cold garden beds." |
