Sempervivum 'Othello'

A well coloured plant and a favourite of mine, despite the stupid name (Othello was not famous for being red). I first bought it from Beaulieu Garden Centre in 1981 though I have no idea where I planted it or what happened. I bought this one in 2005 from Quintrell Downs Garden Centre. A hybrid between S. tectorum 'Rubicundum' and S. 'Atropurpureum' raised by C. V. Sponnier in Germany in 1959.

Erwin Geiger is quoted on Sempervivum List:

"Widespread S. marmoreum hybrid, which was selected from 250 seedlings in the viewing garden in Weihenstephan at the end of the 50s. In my opinion, still the most beautiful red variety of this size. Beautifully shaped, up to 16 cm large rosettes, vigorous and robust!"

Horst Diehm said:

"Very large rosettes. Up to 16 cm. Deep dark brown-red, dark pink flowers, 25 cm tall, very vigorous."

Craigiehall Nursery say:

"Still one of the largest cultivars available, 'Othello' is outstanding. Given generous growing conditions an individual rosette can easily be as large as a tea plate. The leaves are dark red, especially in the colder months, becoming greener in spring and summer but always with a dark red flush.
Allow it some space! Makes a fantastic contrast in a collection with all the smaller rosetted varieties. An RHS Award of Garden Merit Holder.
