I think that Sempervivum names must be conjured up by a magical fairy riding on a cloud of brandy. For me, Pacific Deep throws up ideas of deep grey/blue though I would settle
for cold slate grey with a touch of purple. Green turning to red ochre doesn't really fit, it might as well have been called 'Banana Bounty'. What do I know
(very little, acumulated evidence suggests). Raised by Gary Gosset in the USA in 1988. He says (quoted on Sempervivum List): "Always one of my favorites for color. Love those hairs! From mixed seed, so no parent known. It did not chick much for me." Mountain Crest Gardens say: "A pink to purple and olive green rosette that develops pale stripes in bright light. It offsets and can form a neat clump given time. It's great for rock or crevasse gardens and thrives on neglect." Gary Gosset bred a whole series of "Pacific" cultivars (there's about 60 of them) and I guess finding new names was a problem. |
