A medium sized cultivar without bright colours that managed to remain charming through the season. It was never unruly and the offsets were moderate and well formed - it didn't break down into a carpet
of rice-grain-tiny rosettes. Raqides in the UK by Nicholas Moore from a cross between S. erythraeum (coll. Rila, above the monastery) and S.marmoreum 'Chocolate'. Introduced in 1976. Host Diehm said: "small to medium rosettes, unusual pinkish-brown leaves". Erwin Geiger is quoted on Sempervivum List: "In appearance like a brighter coloured 'Bronze Pastel'. This is a hybrid of the dreamlike S. marmoreum form 'Chocolate' with S. marmoreum ssp. erythraeum. The breeder Nicholas Moore received the highest award for this in 1976 - the Award of Merit. Similar are 'Bronze Pastel' with the same parents, as well as 'Nouveau Pastel'. The latter is a descendant of 'Pastel' and 'Bronze Pastel'. These three name varieties are therefore relatives of my two breeds 'Little Miss Sunshine' and 'Chocolate Pepper'." Craigiehall Nursery say: "A lovely blend of pink and brown colours on 'Pastel'. Small rosettes all crammed together in tight mounds. This is a parent of 'Bronze Pastel' (which we also have) and 'Nouveau Pastel' which are all very similar but with different shades of colour - and all good. A cultivar of S. marmoreum, hence the brown colour base." |
