A greyish cultivar raised by Sandy MacPherson in the USA and released in 1971. Alpine Gardens from Oregon said in their 1982 catalogue: "Broad leaves, grey blue rosettes. Leaves are patterned like water-marked silk." Horst Diehn said; "approx. 10 cm rosettes, grey-brown-green, pink towards the middle, flower pink" Erwin Geiger is quoted on Sempervivum List: "'Rita Jane' was distributed in the early 70s by Sandy MacPherson, the director of the American nursery Sanford. Attractive thick-fleshed rosettes with wide pastel pink to olive green leaves in a very pretty shape! Helen E. Payne wrote in her book "reminiscent of a smiling face of a Dutchman". Again and again there are unusual transformations of the leaves towards the rosette centre in 'Rita Jane' " Mountain Crest Gardens say: "A pearly olive green rosette flushed with pink and tipped in deep purple. It has wide leaves that can develop large, interesting bumps (tubercles). This large cultivar earned the Royal Horticultural Society's Bronze Rosette Award in 1978 for its appearance and ease of cultivation." Sempervivums by Post say: "Sempervivum 'Rita Jane' was introduced in the USA by nurseryman Sandy MacPherson in 1971. The now-defunct Sempervivum Society awarded it a Bronze Rosette, perhaps slightly underestimating its beauty and appeal. This variety is still striking in its appearance today, almost 50 years on, and of a good size." |
