A greyish cultivar, I wasn't a great fan. The name makes me think of caterpillar poo which doesn't do the plant any favours.
On the plus side, it was vigorous and stood up to the wet weather well. Raised by Ed Skrocki in the USA from a cross between S. tectorum and S. 'Atroviolaceum', introduced in 1976. Erwin Geiger is quoted on Sempervivum List: "An 'Atroviolaceum' seedling from 1976 with a very colourful play of colours! From pink and peach rosettes during spring to a striking light yellow colouring at the end of summer. A must have!" Mountain Crest Gardens say: " A charming, rosy cultivar that brings sunny, golden colors each summer. This rosette has long leaves and a soft green base color. 'Sassy Frass' picks up yellow, orange, and pink tones in response to moderate stress from direct sun and drought. It produces lots of new offsets each year and can develop into an impressive clump." The AGS encyclopedia says: "Small to medium-size rosettes of a very uniform light brown with an orange sheen around mid-summer." |
