A seedling from S. 'Cleveland Morgan' raised by Volkmar Schara in Germany in 2001 and distributed very rapidly, I got it from the Czech Republic in 2008. I wonder if Sempervivum
fans have a predisposition to watch Star Trek?
I'm also not sure that a skin tight lycra suit would be acceptable in the modern age but this was a cultivar (and a character) very much of its time. Horst Diehm said: "Rosettes approx. 6.5 cm, velvety surface, leaves bright orange-red in spring, rosette centre light yellow to slightly lemon-green, flowers light pink with yellow-green flower centre, strongly sprouting" Volkmar Schara's description (autotranslated) says: "Sempervivum Seven Of Nine is from a seed of 'Cleveland Morgan'. In March, the leaf ends are bright orange-red, the rosette center is light yellow to slightly lemon green. The whole plant has a velvety surface. In May, the red component slowly recedes, but red tips remain. The rosettes reach a diameter of 6.5cm. The 2.5cm large flowers are light pink, with the outer petals forming almost white. The centre of the flower is yellow-green. A very striking phenomenon that is slowly bringing yellow into the range." Erwin Geiger is quoted on Sempervivum List: "Sowing Sempervivum 'Cleveland Morgan'. In March, the leaf ends are bright orange-red, the rosette center is light yellow to slightly lemon green. The whole plant has a velvety surface. In May, the red component slowly recedes, but red tips remain. The rosettes reach a diameter of 6.5 cm. The 2.5 cm large flowers are light pink, with the outer petals forming almost white. The centre of the flower is yellow-green. A very striking phenomenon that is slowly bringing yellow into the range." |
