Smilacina japonica 'S34'
16th May 2006
Seemingly uninspiring sprays of leaves that are topped by dull clusters of green flowers. In the garden, the regular columns of leaves rise out of their surroundings
like elfin ladders or little visual bursts of morse code. Quite wonderful.
(And as a footnote, this is nothing like the real S.japonica, which has pure white flowers. If anyone knows what this plant actually is, I would be grateful for the information!)

The bright orange berries make a stronger show than the flowers in spring.
