Sonchus fruticosus

I have just (2008) been given a rooted cutting of this shrubby dandelion from Madiera. Lush heads of leaves - it has just been frosted here (3rd January 2009) but the growth at ground level still looks strong, so I hope it will survive.
The original plant was killed outside by a series of cold winters, but I have been given another seedling by a friend and I am not going to take risks with it just yet.
In most gardens this is the hardiest and most satisfactory of the tree Sonchus. In 2016 I wanted to give it more space so I planted it out in what I hoped would be a protected corner. It dropped dead.

Plant World Seeds say:

"This rare and amazing giant tree-daisy comes from the high mountains of Madeira where it makes thick trunks. Huge rosettes of serrated leaves grow on the end of stout branches, the large clumps of golden flowers appearing in spring and early summer. Makes an amazing spectacle in a sheltered garden"

Annie's Annuals (reported on plantlust.com) say:

"A plant to terrify Home Owner’s Associations everywhere! While this may appear to be a plain old dandelion, it is actually a woody-stemmed mammoth of a dandelion from the Canary Isles, growing up to 6 feet high on long, palm-tree-esque “trunks” & flowers that look like a giant version of everyone’s favorite lawn weed. It may sound frightening, but the plant is actually quite a looker, with big, tropical leaves over a foot long & an overall appearance that harkens back to Prehistoric times. Pollinators adore it, too! A fanciful addition to the back of the border & an amusing specimen & conversation piece!"
