A pretty species, the broad leaves have a red tinted midrib that seems to lighten the effect. It grew well for me in the Agave house until the winter of 2017-18
killed it. Rareplants.eu said in their 2020 catalogue: "Sonchus hierrensis 120 (200)cm, woody shrub from El Hierro, La Gomera and La Palma with stout, slightly branching stems and a terminal rosette of strongly serrated leaves and an umbel of quite large, bright yellow flowers. An excellent pot or container plant for any rich, well drained soil in a sunny spot throughout the year. In winter keep drier at a minimum of 10degC in full sun." Parque Nacional Garajonay say on their website: "A tough shrub of up to three metres in height, of the family of the composites, with lobed leaves and highly branching inflorescences with a number of bunches of yellowy flowers. An abundant Canarian endemism in the rocky communities and in the undergrowth of open forested areas. It is widely distributed in forested areas. Flowering: February-March" |
