A tall species from Madiera and the Canary Isles. I was given some seed that a friend of a friend had collected on holiday,
but I can't remember where it came from. It has grown vigorously through the winter but I tried to take a cutting in spring, and it promptly sulked for six months. I think it was just behaving as a winter grower should, but I am going to wait until it flowers before I try to propagate it again. Plants of the World online says: "The native range of this species is Madeira. It grows primarily in the subtropical biome." Flora-On Madeira says: "It lives on rocky cliffs, mainly in the interior of Madeira and at altitudes from 1000 to 1400 meters, but it is also present in places of lower altitude and even in some points of the north coast of the island. It is an example of island gigantism, reaching 2 m in height. It belongs to the so-called 'alliance of woody Sonchus', which comprises about 32 species, the most expressive example of evolutionary radiation in angiosperms in Macaronesia, originating in the Canary Islands." |
