Spathiphyllum make striking houseplants, and are now mass produced by tissue culture, which is where this variegated form appeared. Novel rather than beautiful,
it turns out that it isn't particularly cold tolerant. In the conservatory the white parts were rapidly killed by low temperatures, promptly followed by the green! Glasshouseworks said in their catalogue for 2000; "We have various "Variegated Peace Lily" selections, but this is the most vibrantly streaked, mottled, richly colored one of all - with compact clumping habit. Super." The plant is protected by US Plant Patent no. 9,944 (July 1997). The patent says: "The new cultivar was discovered by the inventor [Daniel Cornelis] in Merelbeke, Belgium, as a spontaneous mutation in a large population of plants of the cultivar Daniel (disclosed in U.S. Plant Pat. No. 8,655). The new cultivar was identified as a single plant within this population of plants of the cultivar Daniel that consistently had variegated leaves compared to plants of the cultivar Daniel that had non-variegated leaves." |
