A spectacular bright leaved form of S. x vanhouttei. I have been rude about the parent before (dull and dusty)
but this is a golden child. A quick internet search suggests that it is a pale green-gold thing that will burn in the sun
but that hasn't been my experience. Perhaps the feeble Cornish Sun is to blame, or perhaps people assume that all golden
leaved shrubs need to shelter in the shade. In my experience it has been a bright rich golden leaved shrub that glows in
the sunlight and produces crisp heads of white flowers. In general I admire Spiraea for their many virtues without really liking them but from time to time I find something wonderful among their number. This is my favourite shrub of the last decade, it has been a delight in the garden. I bought it from Shrublands Park Nursery, their label says: "A deciduous shrub with an upright arching habit with bright yellow leaves and dense clusters of white flower in summer. Prune some of the older flowering shoots to ground level after flowering. Sun and well-drained soil, 1.5 metres." It is a newish cultivar but I can't find a record of where it came from. |
