A more satisfactory sub-shrub than some of the species it have tried. I was warned that it wasn't reliably hardy so it was planted in the Agave house where it has grown into a twiggy dwarf shrub that flowered freely in late summer. This winter hasn't been serious test for it so it will be well established by the time the cold arrives again.
It comes from the mountains of Taiwan and could prove hardier than expected.
A brittle stemmed species which seems to be hardy here. The same thing as Goldfussia pentastemonoides. I have obtained it under two names, S. pentastemonoides and S. rankanensis but both of my plants seem to be the same thing and S. pentastemonoides may be the better name.

I got it from Cally Gardens. Their catalogue says:

"Covered with mauve-blue penstemon like flowers in late summer. New to cultivation so hardiness uncertain - mulch the first winter."

Plants of the World online says:

"The native range of this species is Himalaya to China (Yunnan) and Vietnam. It is a perennial and grows primarily in the subtropical biome."
