Stylophorum lasiocarpum

Archive entry 25.04.10

This arrived quite by chance as a seedling in a pot of something else and it took me a long time to identify it. Wonderful large pale yellow flowers. It has now produced some seed and I am scattering it around hoping that it will find a suitable location and grow.
A rhizomatous perennial from eastern China, it has been short lived here but fortunately seedlings continue to come up unexpectedly. It will possibly become a nuisance if it takes to life under the trees but it can't be more invasive than Meconopsis cambrica and I am still pleased to have that.

Chiltern Seeds said in their 1999 catalogue:

S.lasiocarpum (= woolly-fruited: disppointingly the seed capsule is only slightly hairy). Human-Blood-Wort. Worth growing for its gruesome name alone! This is earned by the reddish sap exuded by the rot and stems of this plant; however, we suggest you stick to ketchup for cosmetic purposes! This is a delightful plant for a shady spot on the rockery, bearing clusters of very pretty yellow flowers. It starts flowering in May and goes right into October when summer becomes just a memory."
