Syngonium macrophyllum

Sent to me as a rooted cutting by a friend who knows that I have an unsettlingly intense love of climbing tropical aroids. He thought that this one might be tough enough to persist in my greenhouse, and it did last for a couple of years before the winter overcame it.

Plants of the World online says:

"The native range of this species is S. Mexico to Ecuador. It is a climber and grows primarily in the wet tropical biome."

Mexico is an optimistic thought, wet tropical less so.

In his 'Revision of Syngonium' Thomas Croat says:

"Syngonium macrophyllum ranges from Mexico to Ecuador (Pacific slope only). Collections from Rio Palenque Field Station reported by Dodson & Gentry (1978) as S. podophyllum are also this species. I believe the latter species is restricted to the other side of the Andes. The species is known from wetter parts of tropical moist forest, premontane wet forest and tropical wet forest and ranges from sea level to 1100 m. It is most common below 700 m. "
