The double flowered form is a pretty thing with petals clustering into a ball flower. It always dangles
with me instead of growing upright, but perhaps moisture and good soil will encourage it. It hasn't increased greatly in a decade but it has hung on to its space tenaciously. Plant Delights Nursery say: "The airy maidenhair fern-like, deer-resistant foliage of Thalictrum delavayi 'Hewitt's Double' adorns the 4' tall stems which are topped from midsummer through fall with large cloud-like flower heads of small, lavender, pompom-like, double flowers...simply a sensational textural element in the summer garden." It is a plant that has been around for a long time, it is included in the RHS Encyclopedia of Gardening (1951), but I haven't been able to discover its origin so sadly Hewitt is currently lost in the mists of time. I have a vague memory that even when I was a teenager people were unaware of its origin. |
