Thelypteris kunthii

A vigorous fern that spreads slowly to form a clump. I have just bought a plug-plant and it is establishing in a pot.

Plant Delights Nursery say:

"The robust Thelypteris kunthii is one of our favorite Southeast US native ferns and certainly one of the most durable ferns we grow. Native to swamps and streambanks from SC west to Texas, the large, light green triangular fronds of abundant maiden fern are produced all summer, and contrast nicely with the near white stipes (stems) that support them. The slowly rhizomatous, deer-resistant, winter-deciduous Thelypteris kunthii spreads nicely to make incredible woodland masses. Not only does abundant maiden fern thrive in shade, but it grows equally well for us in full, baking sun. We think everyone should have an abundance of maidens throughout their garden."

The Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Centre says:

"The gracefully arching fronds of this fern are lime to medium-green in color and grow 2-3 ft. high by 8-12 in. wide. The fronds reach in all directions from clusters of stalks occuring at intervals along the rhizome. The foliage is almost twice cut and the pinnae taper to a point. The species takes on a bronze cast as winter approaches."
