Tillandsia aeranthos

One of the hardiest species. I have seen it recommended for use outside but I have never tried it.

Clive Innes wrote in the Journal of the RHS:

"Tillandsia aeranthos is a real 'air-plant', a term often applied to many of this genus. This is the species known originally as Tillandsia dianthoidea and it will flourish, continue to grow and flower without roots at all! A true epiphyte of extremely easy culture, surviving with only na little attention, but thriving if treated with moderate kindness by spraying frequently with the inclusion of weak liquid fertiliser occasionally. It is a really ideal novelty plant for the home."

Andy's Air Plants say:

"Native to Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina from near sea level to several hundred meters altitude. It is known as the ‘Carnation of the sky’ by the Argentineans and is very popular with Hummingbirds that love the nectar. It grows into clumps of up to a dozen or more rosettes and is a regular and easy bloomer, flowering in the spring with lovely pink bracts and deep purple flowers."
