One of the easiest of the grey leaved Tillandsias to grow, it seems happy in any sunny frost free location. A small rounded prickly thing like a tree climbing hedgehog.
I have grown it several times and it has seemed happiest when mounted - right up to the point when I forget to water it for a month and it dies. Werner Rauh says: "ionantha violet-flowered; refers to the intense violet flower colour. Mexico (from the Atlantic and Pacific coasts to about 1,300m), Guatemala, Nicaragua. Easy, mooderately damp, bright and sunny, can be grown outside in summer. The leaf tips become bright red at bloom time. A favourite species sought by tillandsia fanciers. Because of the small size, suitable for terrariums." Andy's Air Plants says: "When the ionantha's come into their flowering process they color up really well turning fiery red, and then will produce the lovely purple, tubular flowers, then they will produce pups or offsets around the base which will grow and flower again when they reach maturity which is generally one year. |
