An annual species. I saw it at Kelways - I assume they had grown it pout of curiosity and I bought one for the same reason. It grew strongly in the greenhouse,
rooted easily from cuttings, didn't seem to set seed and then the whole lot died in the winter. In the process it exuded elfin charm. Plants of the World online says: "The native range of this species is Tropical & Subtropical America. It is an annual and grows primarily in the seasonally dry tropical biome. It is used as a medicine and for food." Plant World Seeds say: "Clusters of charming, sugar-pink, three-petalled flowers appear over a long period on long, fleshy, erect stems, which are clad with quite awesome tongue-shaped leaves. Growing this gorgeous plant from Tropical America as an annual, is a worthy use for those in colder areas. If you have a shady corner to fill up with a lush, exotic-looking plant, this one will grow rapidly into a dense mound, and it will even self-seed as the seeds are frost-proof. This should be on your “I wouldn’t want to be without it” list.! |
