"Blue" is an optimistic description for this light shade of royal purple but it is a spectacular colour and it made a good display in a tub for a year. Registered by L. J. C.Schoorl in 1987, the KAVB register says: "Exterior: violet purple (CC 77B) with beetroot purple (CC 71A) flame. Broad yellowish white base. Inside: pale violet purple (CC 77B). Star-shaped lemon yellow (CC 13C) base on white ground, anthers saffron yellow (CC 19A)." Gardenia.net says: "A true, pigment-based blue tulip does not exist. Cultivars marketed as "blue" are actually violet, lilac or purple and can read bluish in cool light. The idea of a blue tulip endures for its symbolism - serenity, loyalty and the pursuit of the unattainable - while gardeners enjoy near-blue lookalikes for striking spring displays." |
