A red flowered selection of the species (Turkey, the Caucasus and Iran) with violet bases to the petals.
It flowers early in spring on short stems where it is easily available to a hungry slug (should one happen to be passing). Registered by Visser Czn. in 1987, the KAVB register says: "Exterior: shining cardinal red (CC 53C). Inside: cardinal red (CC 53C), base violet; anthers black." Potterton's Nursery say: "This has to be one of our favourite spring bulbs with 3 to 5 glossy red flowers per stem, each with a very dark centre. The flowers first emerge from the ground in early to mid March and remain in flower as the stem grows to 15cm, for some four to six weeks. Excellent for rockery, bed or trough." |
