A very pretty dwarf tulip, I was given a couple of pots of bulbs at an Alpine Garden Society show and tried them
outside in a large tub where they have not prospered. Some time before December I must sort through the compost and
move them into the greenhouse. I think they need a warm dry summer to recover. The species grows in the mountains of Iran where the typical form is bright red. Ordinarily I would be attracted to bright red flowers but this soft yellow bloom has a cool charm that I am enjoying. Paul Christian wrote in his catalogue: "Although the type is classically thought of as red, a new yellow form has appeared in cultivation within recent years. Penetratingly yellow this is a lovely companion to the above in the early spring garden. " |
